Did you know that the mortality rate in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is 90% when diagnosed after the age of 65?
With no preventative therapy currently available for pre-leukemic individuals, that number is alarming. However, a group led by Professor Liran Shlush at the Weizmann Institute of Science has found that treatment with ROCK inhibitors can inhibit the growth of pre-leukemic mutated cells. This in turn, prevents disease onset.
This breakthrough could ultimately change the course of AML.

RATION (stands for Risk AssessmenT InnOvatioN for low-risk pesticides) aims to propose an improved risk assessment for biological pesticides and will run for 4 years.
The Consortium includes the most prestigious universities across the EU and Israel and top tier agrochemical companies.

Novel Combination Therapy For Improved Management of Depression
Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders, afflicting nearly 300 million people worldwide, with patients showing a heightened risk of self-harm and suicidal ideation.
A drug based on ketamine, a well-known anesthetic used in smaller doses as a party drug, was recently approved by the FDA and indicated for treatment-resistant depression. However, the drug’s use is still restricted, mainly due to the insufficiently understood mechanism of action.

Israel’s ProFuse Technology raises $2.5M for technology that lowers the cost of cultured meat! With the rise of synthetically engineered food, cultured meat or "lab-grown" meat is one of the biggest breakthroughs in modern culinary science and technology. Unfortunately, high prices are impeding consumer mass adoption. Hoping to change that is Profuse Technology, a disruptive Yeda spin-off company, and is based on research done by Eldad Tzahor.

Putting Liquid Biopsies on Solid Ground: Cancer Diagnosis from a Milliliter of Blood
Diagnosing cancer is a complex process that may have just been simplified thanks to a new, multiparameter approach developed at the Weizmann Institute of Science, which may lead to a blood test that will diagnose cancer with unprecedented accuracy.
“Many of the conventional methods clinically available today to detect and diagnose cancer are invasive and unpleasant,” explains Dr. Efrat Shema of Weizmann’s Immunology and Regenerative Biology Department, who headed the research team.

The project partners Weizmann Institute of Science and Acceler8 Venture Builder have met in Rehovot - Israel to prepare the 3-year #EICTransition project funded by the #EU.

A Sustainable Process for Phenol Production
Phenol is an important industrial commodity, but the current production method has serious drawbacks related to safety, selectivity, and formation.
To address this issue, Prof. Ronny Neumann, Faculty of Chemistry, Molecular Chemistry and Materials Science at the Weizmann Institute of Science, recently developed a new phenol production method.
Based on electrocatalytic oxidation of benzene, the new production method is not only simple, efficient, and cost-effective, but it is a lot safer, too.

Subdural hematoma (SDH) is a collection of blood between the inner layer of the dura and the brain that occurs mostly as a result of trauma. In a study to better understand how to treat inflammatory bowel disease at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Led by the group of Prof. Eran Elinav of the Systems Immunology Department, in collaboration with the Molecular Genetics Department’s Prof. Rotem Sorek and a Weizmann spinoff company - BiomX Inc., published their findings in the prestigious journal Cell.
A new source of cannabinoid biosynthesis
Yeda spinoff, Xinteza API, has recently revealed a new source of cannabinoid biosynthesis that does not involve cannabinoids or cannabis. This breakthrough was discovered in research led by Professor Asaph Aharoni, Scientific Co-Founder of Xinteza and Head of the Weizmann Institute of Science Plant Metabolics Lab as well as Head of Weizmann’s Plant and Environmental Sciences Department.

The new company will be called Plantea Bioscience, and the researchers participating in the project are Prof. Sarel-Yaakov Fleischman from the Department of Biomolecular Sciences; Prof. Asaph Aharoni, Head of the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at the Institute; And Prof. Avraham A. Levy, Dean of the Faculty of Biochemistry at the Institute. Dr. Yaarit Weinberg, VP of the Impact NRS Group and the Company's Chief Operating Officer, will also be part of the team.

Over the past 6 months, approx. 800 followers have joined the page every month (see below). As of May 2021, the page has close to 5,500 followers, a majority of which hail from Israel and the United States. 28% of followers specialize in business development, while 13% are researchers. 29% hold senior-level positions in their respective organizations. The Interferon Connection
XL-protein from Germany and Yeda, the commercial arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science, have announced the signing of a collaboration agreement for the commercial exploitation of an improved interferon molecule that was developed by scientists from the Institute and from XL-protein. An Israeli-Australian venture will use solar technology developed at the Weizmann Institute of Science to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of brown coal. The venture has been recently launched in Israel by NewCO2Fuels Ltd., a subsidiary of the Australian company Greenearth Energy Ltd., which has acquired an exclusive worldwide license for the solar technology from Yeda, the Weizmann Institute’s technology transfer arm.
